Unit of Inquiry – ‘How the World Works-Water’
Look around your house for water in solid, liquid and gas form. Record what you find on the chart given using pictures. (For example, steam in the kitchen/bathroom, ice in the freezer, sweat on your forehead) Use the vocabulary ‘solid’, ‘liquid’ and ‘gas’. Encourage your child to think where solid water and water in the form of gas might be found before telling them.
Language Arts
This week we learned about the sounds ‘c’ (as in cat and car) and ‘k’ (as in kick and kit).
Please remember to read a rangeof books with your child and discuss them.
Cut out the weekly words (cat, kick, kit) and stick them to card, try reading them by saying the sounds and blending them together. Keep them with your word collection.
Maths
In maths this week, we have been learning to double numbers. Do some doubling with your child, for numbers below five (for example, ‘double 4’/’4+4’), they can use their fingers for numbers up to 10. Please use the method shown on the next page.Wednesday, September 13, 2006
Unit of Inquiry – ‘How the World Works-Water’
(see attached sheet)
Parent: Fill a small glass with hot water, place a larger glass or clear jug up side down over the top of the steaming glass.
Child: Watch what happens to the steam when it hits the glass. Draw a picture below to show what you see.
Parent: Please write notes on your child’s work to let us know what they have said or noticed, and any questions or ‘wonderings’ they have.
Language Arts
This week we learned about the sounds ‘p’ (as in pin and pink) and ‘n’ (as in net and nine).
- Please remember to read a range of books with your child and discuss them.
- Cut out the weekly words (pat, in, tap) and stick them to card, try reading them by saying the sounds and blending them together. Keep them with your word collection.
- Cut out the attached letters (s,a,t,i,p,n), and stick them to card. See if your child can make simple words by placing letter cards on the table and saying each sound carefully.
Maths
Take 2 containers, different sizes and shapes (e.g. pots, cups, bottles). Compare them by looking at them. Guess which one will hold the most. Use pouring from one container to the other (and vice versa) to find out which one really holds the most. Try with very different sized containers at first (e.g. a cup and a pan), and then compare containers that seem to be a more similar size. Can your child explain what is happening and how they know which one is bigger? Focus on careful pouring so that the comparison is fair-will the measuring be correct if water is spilled? Use vocabulary, ‘over-flowing’, ‘full’, ‘empty’, ‘half full’, ‘this one holds more/less’.

Unit of Inquiry – ‘How the World Works-Water’
Walk with your child around the home.
Where do you see water?
How is the water connected to your house?
Where does it come from?
Where does it go?
Can you find any other liquids in your house?
Look for things that are ‘wet’ or ‘watery’.
Practise talking about what you saw,
so that your child can tell the class all about it!

This week we learned about the sounds ‘t’ (as in tiger and turtle) and ‘i’ (short i, as in ink and pig).
- Please remember to read a range of books with your child and discuss them.

Please hand in all homework some time during the week after it is assigned.
